The Uachtarán Award Recipient
Friday, March 3, 2017
The Hyatt at The Bellevue
Sean Rooney was honored by the The Irish American Business Chamber & Network for his impressive business acumen and achievements for breast cancer research in honor of his late-wife, Kelly Rooney.
Sean has received many accolades through the years, including the 2014 and 2012 Honoree Award at St. Joseph Preparatory School’s Prep Golf Classic and recognition by The American Ireland Fund at their 11th Annual Philadelphia Golf Classic. Further, Sean received the Improving Quality of Life After Breast Cancer Award from Abramson Cancer Center at their Penn Medicine Women Cancer Conference in 2011.
Sean’s great-grandfather, Daniel Rooney, was a saloon owner from Newry, Ireland who emigrated to the United States with his family of nine children and made Pittsburgh, PA their home. Sean’s grandfather, Arthur Rooney, was one of those nine children. In 1933, Arthur founded the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sean’s uncle, Daniel Rooney, was the 30th United States Ambassador to Ireland, from July 2009 through December 2012. Sean is the proud father of five children, ages 25 through 17.
The Irish American Business Chamber & Network’s Uachtarán Award is named in honor of the President of Ireland, or Uachtarán na hEireann, in Irish, and is presented by the Ambassador of Ireland to the United States. In the 1990s, Mary Robinson, the seventh President of Ireland, transformed the role of the President by developing a new sense of Ireland’s economic, political, and cultural links with other countries and cultures, especially those of the Irish Diaspora. Michael Higgins, the ninth and current President of Ireland and the former Minister for arts, culture, and the Gaeltacht in the 1990s, has excelled in this cultural and economic “building bridges” role.
Previous Uachtarán Award recipients include: Monsignor Michael J. Doyle, CBS3 and the CW Philly, Ann Claffey Baiada, Sister Marguerite O’Beirne, OSF, Timothy Chambers, James and Sarah Hasson, and Norbert J. McGettigan, Sr.
