Second Annual Kelly Rooney Memorial Scholarship Pays Tribute to Student Who Lost Mother to Cancer
Wayne, Pa. – May 10, 2012 – The Kelly Rooney Foundation and Save 2nd Base™ today announced that Gordon Allen Dunlop, a senior at Father Judge High School, is the recipient of the second annual Kelly Rooney Memorial Scholarship fund. The $10,000 scholarship is awarded to a high school senior and athlete who lost a parent to cancer. Gordon, a two-time All-Catholic golfer, lost his mother to kidney cancer in 2010, and plans to attend Alvernia College in the fall.
“We are excited to present the second annual Kelly Rooney Memorial Scholarship to Gordon,” said Erin Dugery, co-founder of Save 2nd Base and sister of Kelly Rooney. “Gordon exemplifies all the traits of Kelly – his ability to ‘pay it forward’ is the reason we found him to be the best candidate for this scholarship.”
“We wish Gordon all the best in his future and are confident he will succeed both as a student and an athlete,” adds Sean Rooney, Executive Director of The Kelly Rooney Foundation and husband of Kelly Rooney.
The Kelly Rooney Foundation and Save 2nd Base will present Gordon with the scholarship on May 14 at The Kelly Rooney Foundation’s 6th Annual Golf Outing & Auction at Overbrook Country Club.
The Kelly Rooney Memorial Scholarship bears the namesake of Wayne, Pa. resident Kelly Rooney, who passed away on July 11, 2006 after a courageous, four-year battle with breast cancer at just 43 years old. The scholarship is funded by both The Kelly Rooney Foundation and Save 2nd Base.
